Like most of my peers, I too had soured on real-estate in the aftermath of the great housing crash and moving to ground zero of the housing crisis - Phoenix AZ - on completing grad school only served to reinforce that sentiment.
So, it was sheer luck that I found myself involved in residential real-estate. As a recent immigrant, I was amazed at how many different options U.S. real estate markets offered outside the standard owner-occupied fare since I really didn't have much use for your standard 3-bedroom house/condo. Voila, the fourplex - a wonderful concept that combines all the benefits of residential home ownership while being a great sandbox to try one’s hand at being a landlord.
And, that’s how it started - with a lovely fourplex in Mesa. To my pleasant surprise, I have loved being a landlord and real-estate investor ever since. Managing up to 22 units all by myself at one time taught me every aspect of property management and gave me my most valuable insights into the trade, something I could never have had as just an investor.
As we have graduated to larger, more value-add opportunities, I draw on this experience every day as we navigate an unpredictable future in a highly cyclical industry.
